Smart And Safe Travel Tips For Women Travellers

Traveling solo for the first time can be incredibly exciting, but it might feel a bit overwhelming too. After traveling for nearly two decades alone, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with this handy checklist! And don’t forget to check out our Solo Travel page for more tips.

Zaara’s First-Time Solo Safety Checklist

Before You Leave:

1. Learn Self-Defense Skills: Knowing how to protect yourself is empowering. If you can, take a self-defense class or find webinars online. Learn how to yell, punch, manage adrenaline, and run. Sometimes we need to be our own heroes.

2. Have a Backup Plan: Think about where you’ll stay if you test positive for COVID. Does your hotel have extra rooms? Will you need to find an Airbnb? And don’t forget travel insurance!

3. Register with Your Country’s Travel Program: Stay connected in case of an emergency or natural disaster. In the US, enroll in the STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program). In Canada, the Registration of Canadians Abroad program provides updates on travel advisories. Australia has announced in 2022, there is no need to register travels, but keep in mind about Smart Traveller site!

4. Know Emergency Numbers: Not every country uses 911. Find out the emergency number for your destination here.

5. Pack Smart: Travel light with just a carry-on if you can.

6. Dress Appropriately: Learn about the local culture and what’s considered appropriate attire. Leave flashy jewelry and expensive bags at home.

7. Use Safety Devices: Bring a whistle or personal safety alarm—they emit a loud noise when activated. Also, pack a rubber doorstop for your hotel room door. I never travel without mine! I’ve got incidents where door gets opened at random and I’m not talking just about a budget hotel, but even well-known 5 Star chain hotels too!

8. Choose Your Destination Wisely: While there’s no such thing as a completely ‘safe’ destination, you can always research and read before booking your flights. For first-timers, it might be easier to choose a place where you speak the language. Research your destination and ask other women for tips in Facebook Groups, Reddit or Quora, so you can be better prepared.

Happy travels and stay safe! 💼✈️ For more travel tips and stories from us, follow our blog.
